5 Indoor Leisure Activities for Seniors

Dedicating time for some fun and leisure is just as important for seniors as it is for children. It gets them out socializing with others, it helps to improve their memory, keeps their motor functions operating, improves their mental state, and helps keeps their entire health in check. If you’ve been looking for a few indoor leisure activities for seniors – whether it’s for you or an aging parent to try, here are a few we recommend that will keep you busy and entertained for hours.

Container Gardening

Even if it’s raining or snowing outside, seniors can still garden at home. Those with mobility issues can also take part in container gardening as it requires less lifting and bending. Growing plants indoors can stimulate the senses and create a sense of pride once you get to see the plants, vegetables, and herbs start to grow.

Card Games

If there’s one thing seniors love, it’s card games! It’s the perfect way to pass the time and enjoy a little healthy banter with friends. Even if you’ve never played before, taking up a game of Euchre, Bridge, or Canasta doesn’t take as much time as you may think. Card games are not only highly social and engaging activities, but they also exercise our memory and other cognitive functions which are imperative for our mental health during those Golden years.

Painting

Creative activities like painting can give seniors a sense of purpose and challenge their imagination. It’s also a great way to help with hand and eye coordination and concentration.

Line Dancing

A finished basement or a large living room is all the space you need to move around in. Line dancing is not only a ton of knee-slapping fun for seniors, but it can also improve cardiovascular health as well as posture and motor performance. All you need is a laptop or tablet, and you can stream hundreds of line dancing videos online right at home.

Stair Climbing

Physical activities such as biking, running, and walking may not always be appropriate for a senior, based on their age and health condition. But you can make up for it by using the stairs instead. Stair climbing indoors is easy to do and very effective for getting in some physical activity. Doing just a few minutes a day can greatly reduce the risk of heart attacks and keep you or your parent’s weight at a healthy level.

Indoor leisure activities are great for seniors, but they’re most enjoyable when experienced with others.  If you or a loved one is living alone and looking for more social interaction and personal care, contact us at C-Care.
