5 Ways to Spend More Time with Your Grandparents

We often take our grandparents for granted and forget to spend more time with them. But with our busy schedules, it’s often hard to fit in the time to visit our parents, let alone anyone else in the family. However, with these quick tips, you’ll be able to spend more quality time with your grandparents, who always appreciate a visit.

Call Them Monthly (Or Weekly!)

Taking ten minutes to pick up the phone and call them once a month shouldn’t take up too much time out of your schedule. Just remember, your grandparents are often busy enjoying their retirement. So if you can set a specific week, day and time, it will be easier to remember, and they’ll make sure they’re free during that time every month.

Take Them To Lunch

As mobility becomes more difficult, elderly grandparents don’t get to go out as much. Taking them for a nice stroll to their favourite restaurant can really brighten their day and give you quality time together.

Learn A Card Game

Let’s face it, grandparents are always excited to play card games. But this doesn’t mean you have to learn how to play bridge or canasta (although that may be a bonus). Even simple card games can make for an enjoyable visit and will help to keep their minds sharp. Don’t know any games? Playing a board game like Scrabble is just as fun.

Take Them Dancing

Many seniors can still move as they used to on the dance floor. So why not take them out for a night of line dancing? Even if they’re restricted to a wheelchair, they’ll love just being out listening to their old favourite tunes and showing off their moves.

Go Shopping With Them

Even the most mundane activity like grocery shopping can turn into an adventure with your grandparents. Just one trip to a farmer’s market and you’ll know more about how to grow your own food and what’s in season/out of season than if you were to take a cooking course. Best of all, you can even cook up those groceries to create a tasty meal together.

Visit The Gardens

With a big age difference, it can often be difficult to find an activity you both can enjoy. That’s where a trip to the botanical gardens makes the perfect day out for all generations. You can just relax and enjoy each other’s company while you take in the beautiful sites and smells around you.
