Should You Consider Private Hospital Care For Your Elderly Parent?

Posted By

Perhaps you have noticed some subtle signs that your parents are not able to keep up with some of the everyday tasks that they once used to do. It can be a difficult conversation to have with your parent if you haven’t already broached the topic, but many seniors are open to the idea of having personalized care and services in their home because it allows them to retain their independence. Here are some signs that it may be time to consider private hospital care for your elderly parent(s).

Private Hospital Care For My Elderly Parent?

  • Unable to Keep Up with Daily Tasks. This may be the most obvious (and yet subtle) way to determine if your parent could benefit from private hospital care. Has your parent been forgetting to eat? Perhaps the dishes are piling up in the sink, food has been left to spoil in the fridge or he or she has not been taking out the trash.
  • Forgetfulness. Has your parent been forgetting to take his or her medication or taking the wrong dosages? Perhaps your parent has left their mail to pile up or has late payment notices because he or she has not been paying bills on time. Your parent may also be missing appointments. These are all signs that your parent may benefit from private hospital care.
  • Uncertainty with Normal Tasks. Perhaps your parents are having trouble remembering how to turn on the stove or doing other day-to-day tasks that used to be easy. These are symptoms that should be evaluated by a doctor.
  • Decline in Overall Health. Perhaps your parent has unexplained bruises or they have lost weight recently. Has their diet been poor? Have they been in an increased number of car accidents due to declining vision?
  • Mobility Issues. Are your parents having trouble getting around their home? Perhaps their balance is off or they have trouble getting up from the couch. Mobility issues can become a serious cause for concern as they are at an increased risk of falling.

Mentally, your parents may have a loss of interest in activities that once consumed their time. Perhaps they are having a lot of mood swings lately. Similarly, if your parents are struggling with personal care (such as showering) and this has become noticeable, these are also signs that your parents could benefit from private hospital care.
